Doing Embroidery on Caps

When you purchased your embroidery machine, one of the things that you learned you could do with it is to embroider on caps and various other soft hats. You envisioned being able to put your favorite team on your caps of course, as this is definitely a job cut out for an embroidery machine.

Well, that’s great, as long as you are embroidering a cap for your own use or a loved one, but you will have to be very careful embroidering caps for resale. The thing is of course that many teams have strict control on the use of their names on any advertising, and of course the copyright laws are very much stronger than anything you could say in your defense.

Of course, you could buy licensed embroidery designs, where the person selling the designs has already paid for their use. You then can make and sell all the caps you desire. Just make sure you keep your right to do so in your files so that if ever you are questioned about it, you have the proof right at your fingertips.

Keep in mind too to not take on huge orders for caps, as doing caps on home machines requires an infinite amount of patience, whereas doing them on a commercial machine is a snap. Home machines tend to foul up small writing and often there is distortion of the logo or message. After all caps are not flat, and when you use a commercial machine, it comes with a cap frame that does make the work area basically flat for you! Those who do not have a commercial frame yet still want to do caps will find that you will have to mess around with unconventional means, such as sticky backing, spray adhesive, and even worse pins to flatten the cap as best as you can to prepare it for embroidery, and of which is tedious and time consuming!

Thus I highly suggest that you have the above commercial machine with a cap frame. Let’s face it having the right tool for doing anything changes everything, and this is not an exception to that rule.

Working away from home and traveling with a machine and performing cap embroidery will definitely require you to arm yourself with what will be needed to hold down that cap so that the work can be done quickly and efficiently. With some commercial machines if you wish to embroider a cap you will have a special customized hat form to put the cap onto, securing it with additional clips so that the hat absolutely cannot move while it is being worked on. Such custom forms are very helpful, and if you are going to specialize in hat embroidery, I heartily suggest you look for an embroidery machine that gives you such.

Today there are so many places that perform cap embroidery that many have had to specialize. One such has sold only 5 panel wool blend caps, and specializes in putting on Navy ships or merchant marines ship names. As you can imagine, specialization is tantamount to getting the most orders for your cap embroidery business.
